Contemporary Galleries
Whenever I have the time I try to seek out a contemporary design or art gallery for some inspiration. Here are a few of my favourites:The museum of Modern Art - New YorkI visited (MoMA) back in 2012 whilst I was over in New York for Christmas and I loved it. Contrary to its title the museum had quite a few contemporary design related exhibits rather than just art. One in particular that stands out for me was the exhibition section named 'Plywood: Material, Process, Form'. It had some iconic pieces of contemporary furniture, for instance Sori Yanagis Butterfly Stool. 1956. Constructed from molded plywood and iconic contemporary furniture by Alvar Aalto, Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, and Arne Jacobsen. There were some other very interesting exhibitions including an interactive projection installation. The permanent collection was extensive and well worth a look. Id definitely recommend a trip here If you happen to be in New York. The museum of Modern Art & the MAXXI - RomeI have visited Rome twice now and I love the city. There is so much to do and see in Rome that a modern art museum might not be top of your list. However the last time I was there was August 2017, the temperature was reaching 40 degrees and an air condition gallery was very enticing! We decided to visit the museum of modern Art first. I have to be honest, MoMA in Rome wasnt a patch on the one in New York. It still worth a visit though. Here are a few things that stood out to me (left-hand image is actually the buildings roof, right hand image is a painting by Japanese artist Kazuki Takamatsu): I was more impressed with the MAXXI museum. If you are interested in modern architecture its worth going to see the building alone. The building was designed by Zaha Hadid and also houses some of her contemporary furniture and contemporary lighting products on the top floor which was my favourite part. The floors in between showcase contemporary art, design and some impressive architectural models. Yorkshire Sculpture ParkLast but not least in my home county of Yorkshire. I try to visit at least twice a year. With both indoor and large outdoor grounds peppered with exhibits it really is worth a visit. This year I went to see the Tony Cragg exhibition which closed in September 2017 however the open air works are there until March 2018. I was in awe of these huge contemporary sculptures. The morphed organic forms are impressive alone but also the various materials and finishes they come in are wonderful. The YSP also has some long term exhibits well worth seeing and constantly has new exhibitions. I recently visited YSP to check out the Chiharu Shiota: Beyond Time installation in the chapel. There was another exhibition on which was mainly photographs which I wasnt overly impressed with but it was worth the visit just to see the 'Beyond Time' installation. Id love to see a time-lapse video of her putting this together! Its on until September 2018 as far as I know. Why not check out our "Colourful wall art" or other products.[product_category category="Chromatic Waves, Fibonacci Shade, Smashed, Solar Eclipse 2"]
